The obsession with number crunching has caused many providers to sacrifice many potentially rewarding aspects of developing a corporate health program. There are many more completely underutilized tricks to addressing absenteeism, productivity & presenteeism, therefore that magical ROI, but they are not used because they don't quite fit into the metrics template. Providers have to create a completely measurable program to provide the stats which inevitably leads to a uniform program - again one size fits very few. We think we are measuring key performance indicators, but I guess that depends on what the definition of performance is.
Designing the performance of a program - yes - will sacrifice a certain amount of that digitized data, there are certain aspects of humanity that just cannot be encrypted. Here are a few of my thoughts to ultimately "dedigitize" and "re humanize" corporate health initiatives and seriously engage the unengaged malaise - aka - charge employee motivation - the ultimate business benefit.
How 'bout let's ditch "corporate health". How bout we let our people know its about their health, they are our priority, kind of like the barter system - a symbiotic relationship - the health is for you the people. I like "employee health rewards" or how 'bout "health appreciation". I personally like "strength through health initiatives" - but unfortunately it would never fly.
It is truly astounding how a corporate fitness program can be created that builds corporate camaraderie, perhaps one of the greatest motivators for corporate engagement.
Why not design a program that not only works with the individual that signs up I know factually - many employees that need health support the most, do not sign up for programs!!!! Whether it be personal fear, despair, embarrassment, fear of personal information being exposed to management, fear of failure... many don't. Many will NOT sign up for a fitness program because they would rather have root canal than step foot in a gym. What if someone wants a nutrition program to prevent chronic disease, but not to lose weight? Camaraderie is very powerful. And its not just about a "corporate challenge" a few times a year... a good program continually sparks people to action. Even if we didn't like summer camp back in the day - there is an inner teen that would love to relive it!
I have seen repeatedly companies that only offer programs to employees with existing health issues. Kind of like our healthcare system - we don't really have health care we have sick care. Why can't we reward the healthy as well - we all have a new level we can be working toward, why must there be a "challenge" to be eligible for a program?
Ever watch the show "Undercover Boss." It is one of the top rated shows. Episodes are not about ROI, getting ahead of the competition... they always come down to how the big boss went down into the meat grinder of the company, found some valuable, dedicated employees living a very hard life, and how they rewarded them - helping them out with a serious personal goal. I kind of think of the show as the corporate chick flick. Why is it top rated? It brings out the corporate knight in shining armor, the very human fantasy of happily ever after. It can bring a tear to the eye of even the "staunchiest" executive - if nobody else is looking!
Our automated, measurable programs in the name of conformity, measurable outcomes are just not servicing real health risks and not serving many of those in need. I also believe it is just not measuring what execs think it is measuring. Capture the real spirit, intent & potential of workplace health & fitness.
